Dear Ms. Vass, I love reading your articles on the Ladders. I was reading the “13 Ways Your Resume Can Say ‘I’m Unprofessional'” and was wondering about the “Not spelling out the name of an employer”. I worked for IBM for 13 years and was wondering if I should put International Business Machines or is it okay to just put IBM?

    Any assistance is appreciated.

    Thank you for your articles.

      HI Terry,

Thanks for your kind words! I would say that IBM is a very strong exception to the rule when it comes to spelling out company names. Spelling out “International Business Machines” couldn’t hurt as far as applicant tracking system logic goes, of course, but I’m inclined to think most hiring managers are more apt to use the search term “IBM” in this instance, and IBM is far better known by its initials.
